What is Bullying?

Bullying is repeated negative actions where there is an imbalance of strength, or size or power.
(Someone who intentionally hurts another)

What does Bullying look like?

Bullies can look like any other kid, size, gender, ethnicity or race play very little in what makes up a person a bully. Bullies seek power over another.

Types of Bulling


Direct

  • Verbal
  • Exclusion
  • Pushing/Shoving
  • Glaring
  • Book Dumping

Indirect

  • Whispering
  • Rumors/Gossip/Secrets
  • Exclusion
  • Giggle & Run away

What is the difference between Bullying vs. Rough Play


Bullying

1.      Target has difficulty defending self

2.      Repetition of actions

3.      Power Imbalance

4.      Facial Expressions

Rough Play

1.      Relationship is among friends

2.      Equal power


How to deal with bullies!

 

If you are the person being bullied?

  • Talk to a teacher, parent or trusted adult about what is happening to you?
  • Do not stand around alone, hangout with friends
  • If you haven’t told the bully to stop yet, Do it now. Sometimes they will continue to bullying simply because you didn’t say stop.
  • Remember that it is not your fault that you are being bullied!
  • You are not alone.

What can you do if you see someone else is being bullied!

  • Step in and stop it. If you do nothing you are saying bullying is ok with you.
  • You should show the bully that you think they are doing something wrong and mean.
  • Tell an adult about what you saw.

Are you a Bully?

  • Have you ever bullied someone else?
  • If you sometimes bully, try to find other ways to make yourself feel good.
  • Most Bullies aren’t liked, even if it starts out that way.
