What can you do as a kid?

Many young people ask that question of themselves and adults all the time. The truth is that you can do many things to prevent gangs in your community. What are those things? To start...

  1. Do not associate with gang members or suspected gang members yourself.
  2. Report graffiti to your local police department as soon as it is seen. Graffiti is usually the first sign a gang is moving into a neighborhood. By notifying the police, they will remove the graffiti quickly, keeping the neighborhood free of "blight" and the implication that it is unsafe.
  3. Get involved in afterschool activities, do not just "hangout" on a corner or in a park. Get your friends involved. This will protect you and your friends from being mistaken as rival's by suspected gang members and reduce the risk you might be hurt.
  4. If someone attempts to get your to join a gang, tell someone. Tell your parents, guardian, teachers, school liaison officer or report it to the police. In most states in the country there are specific crimes for attempting to recruit young people into gangs in near or around school grounds or parks.
  5. Do not wear clothing in which the colors might be suspected gang colors. If you do not know which ones might be of risk to you speak to your local police department or school safety person.
  6. If you see crimes being committed call 911 immediately and report it. By not reporting it your provide the gang members the control over the neighborhood they seek. FEAR! Do not buy into that, by reporting crimes right away, police can intervene as early as possible before a problem develops out of control.
  7. You are the number one person to stop gangs in your community, by staying involved in your community, you can prevent gangs from getting a foot hold in your community.
